Cherbourg Ferry Port Information

About The Port

Cherbourg is a relatively quiet ferry port in France but is still very popular with a number of routes operating to and from the UK. There are up to 25 sailings per week depending on the time of year. Some of the crossings include Poole, Portsmouth, Guernsey, Dublin & Rosslare which connect France to England, Guernsey & Ireland.

Cherbourg port has been a strategic stronghold for much of its history given its advantageous location. Its first castle was first built in the 5th century and throughout the eras it has seen its fair share of battles. Louis XVI and Napoleon both took particular interest in strengthening the harbour and over time, it gradually became the second largest artificial harbour in the world which is the title it has today.

It offers a number of ferry routes to connect France with a number of its surrounding neighbours. The various routes are operated by Brittany Ferries, Condor Ferries, Irish Ferries and Stena Line. There is one main terminal.

Directions For Getting There

If you are travelling by car, Cherbourg Ferry Port is well signposted once you reach Cherbourg. From Paris, take the A15, then the E05 towards Rouen. Then follow the A13 towards Caen and from there the E46 takes you all the way to Cherbourg. Parking in front of the terminal is for short-stay only but near the terminal there is secure parking for long-stay.

If you are travelling by rail, Gare de Cherbourg (Avenue Jean-François Millet) is connected to the rest of France by the SNCF network. It takes approximately 40 minutes to walk between the train station and Cherbourg ferry terminal.

If you are travelling by coach, there are a number of national services that operate into Cherbourg. Alternatively, the port is a 10 - 15 minute walk from the town centre. The nearest bus stop is on 'Boulevard Maritime' near the cinema.
